Qatar's participation in the conference of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) in the United States of America

An official delegation from the Ministry of Municipality and the Environment (MME), represented by the Urban Planning Department, participated in the annual conference of the International Society of City Planners (ISOCARP), entitled "Smart Communities", held in Portland, Oregon, USA, from 24-27, October, 2017. The conference focused on the future of the cities in the information age with digital revolution. The role of urban planners in meeting challenges of city planning and achieving aspirations of the communities was a key theme of the conference. The conference offered facilitated debate and intense discussions to explore constructive solutions relating to urban planning issues by taking advantage of available digital platforms of the 21st century. Urban Planning Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has become an active member of the ISOCARP organization since last year.
The MME delegation was headed by Eng. Abdulla Al-Karrani, Director of Urban Planning Department. The other members of the delegation included Mr. Mubarak Al Nuaimi, Technical Advisor of the Assistant Undersecretary for Urban Planning Affairs, Mrs. Maryam Zainal, Head of GIS team, Ms. Noora Al Suwaidi, Head of the Mega Projects team, Dr. Slavik Leidwin, Urban Planner and the Vice President of the ISOCARP Organization, Dr. Yasser Hammam, Senior GIS Specialist, and Prof. Ali Abdul AL-Raouf, Training, Research and Capacity Development Coordinator in the Urban Planning Department.
The MME delegation presented four technical papers in the fields of urban planning and urban design with particular focus on the application of information tools and the concepts of sustainable smart cities solutions in the 21st century. International experience and local Qatari context were blended in these presentations as specific case studies.
On the sidelines of the conference, the head of the delegation Eng. Abdulla Al-Karrani met with the president of the ISOCARP organization to discuss future technical cooperation and exchange of experiences in order to build and enhance technical capacities of the MME engineers, planners and urban designers. The MME delegation also met with the director of the American Planning Association do discuss future cooperation with the association in the fields of urban planning and urban design to promote sustainable development in Qatar.
